General Questions
Why do I need to register?
Registering lets a user create their own Book Adventure account. Once an account is created, we can help kids keep track of all of the points they earn so they can win cool prizes and allow parents and teachers to access primary site features such as Prize Approval, Account Information and Reports.

How do parents get e-mail if they don't already have e-mail. What do they do?

What's a User Name?
A User Name is the made-up name that you pick when you register. Unlike your real name, it can be anything you want, just make sure it is unique.
We have a lot of users on the site, so be creative when choosing your user name.

When registering, I keep getting the message: “Sorry that user name is already in use. Please select another.” What does that mean?
You have chosen a user name that is already being used by another member of Book Adventure. To create a user name try combining names with numbers that are significant to you. A birth year, sports number or part of a phone number are good. For example: Elvis1990 or Elvis89. You can also try different combinations
of your name. For example: PresleyElvis, ElvisP, PresleyE or PresleyEA. Be as creative as you can.

Why must a parent's e-mail address be submitted?
A parent's e-mail address lets us know where to send messages in order to ask for approval on all prize requests. When a parent's e-mail address is submitted, we can tell them that their child has registered at Book Adventure; once the parent registers, the child can start redeeming prizes! (Remember that a kid can still play without a parent's e-mail address, they just will not be able to win the prizes that need their parent's approval.)

What's a Class Name?
When a teacher registered, he or she chose a Class Name for the whole class to use. That way, when a student starts quizzing and earning prizes, their teacher can see how well they are doing, and we know who to ask for prize approval. Click here for additional help.

Why does a Class Name need to be submitted?
When a Class Name is submitted, we can tell the teacher that a student has registered at Book Adventure. He or she can then see how the student is doing and approve their prize requests.

How do I link my home playing student’s account to my parent account?
The key to linking a parent and home playing student’s account is the email address.
Make sure the email address is the same on both the parent and child’s Account Information page.
When I try to register as a parent, I get the message: “There is someone else registered with that
email address. Please select another.” What does that mean?
When you receive that message, it means you are already registered as a parent with Book Adventure. Email the webmaster at bawebmaster@bookadventure.com and ask for your user name and password.
Please be sure to include the email address you put on your registration.

When I try to log in, I keep getting the Beware of Dog page. What do I do?
First make sure you are using the correct log in information.
You can verify this by emailing the Book Adventure webmaster at
bawebmaster@bookadventure.com
with the log in information you are trying.
The next thing you can do is check the security settings on your computer.
If they are set too high, they may not let your computer accept cookies.

- Select "Tools" from the menu bar, then select "Internet Options", a new screen will appear.
- Select the tab titled "Security", change the setting bar to "Medium".

My child had trouble logging in and received the lock out message.
ERROR: You have had too many failed attempts to login. This account
has been temporarily locked for 30 minutes. You will have to wait approximately 30
minutes for the account to become available again. If there is an email address associated
with your account, an email has been sent letting your parent or teacher know that
we have locked the account temporarily. Why did this happen?
This happens when a child enters the incorrect user name and password 5 times.
If your child is entering the correct user name, but the password is not correct,
an email will be sent notifying you that your child has been locked out and provide
you with the correct log in information. If your child is entering the wrong user name,
the email will be sent to the email address linked to that user name.
If that user name belongs to someone else, they will get the email.

My child was locked out of his/her account, but I never received an email from
Book Adventure with the correct log in information. Why is this?
This may have happened for several reasons. The email containing the correct
log in information is sent to the email address associated with the user name being entered.
If your child entered the wrong user name, the email went to the owner of that user name.
Another reason could be caused by your spam blockers or email filters. If you do not have
Book Adventure on your “Safe List”, your blockers or filters may delete our email before it reaches you.
To obtain the correct log in information email the webmaster at
bawebmaster@bookadventure.com and ask for
your user name and password. Be sure to include the email address that you registered with.

I received an email from Book Adventure telling me that my child’s account was locked for 30 minutes. My child wasn’t on the Book Adventure site, so why am I getting this message?
You received this message because a user tried to log in using your child’s user name.
After 5 tries the person could not match the password correctly, so your child’s account was locked.
This prevents someone from accidentally getting into your child’s account.

Questions About Book Finder
How can I find a really cool book to read?
Register on Book Adventure, go to the Kids Zone, and then check out the Book Finder! If you know a cool author, you can enter his or her name in the Book Finder search engine - it will find all the kids' books that he or she has written. Or, you can get Rex and Bailey to help you find a book - you'll tell them what grade and what some of your hobbies and interests are, and they'll find something great for you to read!
How do I print out a list of books?
Book Adventure allows you to create reading lists once you register, which can be customized to grade level, interests, or favorite author. For example, to access reading lists by grade level, follow these steps:
- Log in to your account as you normally would.
- Go to "Kids Zone" and click "Book Finder".
- "Help Me Find a Book" allows you to view books based on grade level and interests. To view all books for one grade, select the grade level in the first pull-down menu, and "all of the matching books" in the "How many books would you like returned?" pull-down menu at the bottom of the page. Leave all other menus and check boxes empty to view every kind of fiction and non-fiction book for that grade level. Then click the "Submit!" button.
- The "Search Results" page will appear, listing all of the books for the grade level selected. You may either view the list online, or click "Print" in the upper left corner of "Search Results" to generate a printable page.

Can I read books online that I search for at Book Adventure?
Book Adventure does not provide books online. Readers use Book Adventure to create reading lists based on their grade level and interests, locate the books at their school, home, library, or bookstore, and take quizzes at Book Adventure's Quiz-O-Matic.

Questions About Quiz-O-Matic
What if a kid can't find the book that he/she read?
Check to make sure that the kid has got the correct title or author typed in - if they do, it's possible that we may not have a quiz in the Quiz-O-Matic for that book at the moment, so it won't be listed.
What if Quiz-O-Matic won't let a kid take a quiz?
First, make sure the kid is
registered. Then, Quiz-O-Matic will allow the child to quiz on a book up to 2 times, or until he/she scores
perfectly, whichever comes first. So if they have quizzed on that book twice or already aced it, it's time for a new book's quiz!
What if my child reads a book from the Book Finder, but can’t find the quiz in the Quiz-O-Matic?
Check to see if quiz level parameters have been set up.
Quiz level parameters limit what grade level books a child can quiz on. They can be set up by teachers or parents through their Account Information page.
See the Parents Place FAQ’s or the Teachers Lounge FAQ’s for more information.

How come points are not earned for every quiz taken?
Book Adventure has been modified so that Readers now only receive points for the highest score greater than 90%** when taking quizzes on a book. **For reading level K-2, the percentage is 80% instead of 90%. For more information on this change, click here.
How many points are quizzes worth?
That depends on the grade level of the quiz. Students taking quizzes on books for grades
k-2 can earn a maximum of 100 points for a 5 question quiz. Students taking quizzes on books
for grades 3-5 can earn a maximum of 150 points for a 10 question quiz. Students taking quizzes
on books for grades 6-8 can earn a maximum of 200 points for a 10 question quiz.
Questions About Prizes
How does a kid get prizes?
After a kid has registered and earned points from taking quizzes, the child will check out the Prize Library page to see what prizes they are eligible to request. Once they have enough points, they will then click on the prize that's of interest to them, and should then click "Get this prize!" to request the prize. We'll send a message to their parent or teacher asking them to approve it right away!
Some prizes are "Instant Win" prizes (See Cool Stuff), and can be printed out directly from a computer. These prizes do not require parent or teacher authorization.
How long does it take a prize to get to a kid?
Once a parent or teacher has approved a prize, the child needs to log back into his/her account and click on
Prize Status. If the prize is a downloadable prize, follow the directions on the site to download it, print
it and have it immediately. If the prize has a certificate, it needs to be printed, filled out and mailed to
the sponsor. The sponsor will mail the prize to the address on the certificate.
There are no prizes that are sent automatically to a child.
What happens to prize points if a parent or teacher doesn’t approve a child’s prize request or the child does not print the prize or prize certificate?
If a parent or teacher doesn't approve a prize, or if 30 days pass after a kid has picked the prize, all points will be returned back to the kid. That means the child gets to pick a new, different prize!
If a parent or teacher disapproves a prize request, the points are automatically reinstated to the kid.
